The Flora Macdonald Independent Hostel is set on the beautiful Sleat Peninsula on the Isle of Skye. It has stunning views over the Sound of Sleat to the mountains of mainland Scotland opposite. It is in a peaceful location, perfect for visiting local attractions. Individual and group bookings are welcome. The Hostel is an ideal budget accommodation for visitors arriving or leaving via the Mallaig-Armadale ferry. It has been run for over twenty years by local crofter Peter Macdonald
The Flora Macdonald Hostel has now converted its dormitories into private rooms. This means that we can offer budget private rooms for two, three, four, six and ten people. For group bookings we can accept twenty eight guests. The hostel has been a very popular destination for over twenty years with several of the groups who stay returning year on year.
Beautifully situated, guests often remark on the stunning views. The sunrise over the mountains of Knoydart opposite can be spectacular. Sleat is a popular base from which many visitors visit the whole island. The Hostel has become popular with families and backpackers alike. We are half a mile away from the Sabhal Mor Ostaig Gaelic College. The local area is popular with lovers of outdoor activities and also with those who wish to explore the rich culture and history of the Isle of Skye. The Hostel is three miles from the nearest shop. Please ensure you bring food supplies with you.
The Hostel is owned and operated by Peter Macdonald, direct descendant of Lord of the Isles, Macdonald chiefs and Robert the Bruce. He is also a local historian and gives lectures on the real story of Flora MacDonald, heroine of the 1745 rebellion. He can reveal every detail of of Skye, its history, its culture, its people, the mountains and wildlife from BC to the present day.
The Hostel is situated just north of Armadale pier, on the main bus route to Broadford and Portree.
To get here take the road over the now free Skye Bridge and just outside Broadford turn off the main road towards Armadale. Just 2 miles before Armadale is the turning to Kilmore.
Please note that the nearest shop is 3 miles distant and closes daily at 6pm. The shop is also closed at weekends. A limited selection of frozen and dried food is available to purchase on site and guests can use our kitchens to prepare this for themselves.
