Named after the heroine of the 1745 rebellion, Flora Macdonald, the hostel has welcomed visitor to the Sleat peninsula and Skye for more than 20 years. We are small independent traditional hostel in the lovely village of Kilmore close to the Armadale ferry. We might be one hour drive from the main village of Portree, but our stunning views to the mountains of Knoydart across on the mainland are just breath taking. And even though you will not find pubs and shops in our village, the calls of the birds, the views and the tranquillity of our location will make your stay at Skye unforgettable.
We offer private budget rooms for two, three, four and six people and we also take group bookings (up to 20 people). Our small rooms for two, three and four, which are located in our wooden chalet, share bathroom and kitchen. And our bigger rooms, which ca be found in the main building, are en-suite. Both of our kitchens are fully equipped and provide basics like sugar, tea, coffee and oil and salt and pepper, so that you don't have to carry them! Our hostel also features cosy common area where you can enjoy the fire while watching the sunset over the mountains. Or while reading one of our "book by book swap" books. Or you can challenge your group and play a round of Scrabble and other games we have. See who wins! you will also fall under the spell of our sweet Eriskay ponies, which love nothing more than our guests' attention and some carrot or apple. And maybe you will see even some deer!
We are half a mile away from the Sabhal Mor Ostaig Gaelic College (10 mins walk), so you can easily enjoy the frequent gigs and performances the college offers during the summer. Or you can even take part in one of the Gaelic language and arts courses. The local area is popular with lovers of outdoor activities. You can visit the lighthouse at Point of Sleat, Camas Daraich sandy beach, walk in of the Sleat's forests, delve into Skye' s interesting geology at Ord or visit the recently opened Torabhaig distillery.
The Hostel is owned and operated by Peter Macdonald and his family. The family has lived in Kilmore for generations and Peter as well as his children are always happy to share stories and knowledge about Skye, Scottish history as well as Flora Macdonald herself!
The Hostel is situated just north of Armadale pier, on the main bus route to Broadford and Portree. To get here take the road over the now free Skye Bridge and just outside Broadford turn off the main road towards Armadale. Just 2 miles before Armadale is the turning to Kilmore. Once in Kilmore just follow the signs to the hostel.
Please note that the nearest shop is 3 miles distant and closes at 5:30 pm on weekdays. Other option is the Coop in Broadford, which closes daily at 22 pm. A limited selection of frozen and dried food is available to purchase on site, however we recommend to stock up on your way here.
Currently we accept payment IN CASH ONLY and the check in is possible between 5pm and 9pm.
